Andre Tan obtained his Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore in 2000. He continued his studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art with 1st Class Honours in 2004. Later in 2005, he continued to study at LASALLE College of the Arts and obtained his Master of Arts in Fine Arts in 2006. Andre was the recipient of the Judge’s Choice for UTGP08-Kenichiro Mogi Prize (2008, Japan), Studentship Scheme (2005) in LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, and also received the Georgette Chen Arts Scholarship (1999). Andre’s work is often viewed in relation to the sensibilities of Pop Art, of reproduced images from pop culture, in the commercial style of advertising and mass communication. He deliberates on Pop Art’s obsession with the everyday and its critique of popular culture and he reflects on the effects of commercialism in society. His paintings are in private collections in Hong Kong, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Italy, Austria, India, Australia, Brazil and Turks & Caicos Islands.
Arie Smit, born 1916, is an Indonesian citizen from the Netherlands. In 1938, Arie Smit came to Indonesia on a military contract, designated to the Topographical Service. He was then transferred to the infantry in East Java in 1942 where he was captured by the Japanese army. He spent the next three and a half years in forced labour camps across Singapore, Burma and Thailand. In 1945 he was released and returned to the New Republic of Indonesia. In 1951, Arie Smit became a citizen of Indonesia where he spent the next few years teaching graphics and lithography at the Institut Teknologi Bandung in West Java. In 1953, Arie Smit had his first exhibition in Palembeng. The painter finally visited Bali in 1956. With his love for bright colours, he was captured by the Balinese landscapes. His vibrant art celebrates the beauty of Bali and its people. His paintings are visually complex and elegant, with poetic use of colours. Brendan Neiland, b.1941, is a leading British contemporary painter and printmaker known for his distinct style of using architecture to create works that are uniquely pictorial. The subtle relationship between the facade, its environment and its viewers is the concept that he explores and beautifully portrays in his works. His paintings motivate viewers to look at architecture and technology in a completely new dimension and to appreciate its integral part in today’s modern world. Neiland, throughout his career, has made the image of the modern city his own; the city to Neiland is what the countryside is to landscape painters. Neiland’s works, explore the enigma of modern metropolitan existence. Buildings are static in form. However, Brendan draws out another dimension by transforming them and capturing the reflective surfaces of the buildings on other buildings, and buildings on water bodies. One senses the tension between movement and stasis, reflection and absorption, imagery of clouds and concrete buildings, which take on a geometrical dimension. He was also Keeper of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In 1998 he was commissioned by the Royal Mail to design a postage stamp. Carlo Magno (b. 1960) has successfully reinvented himself as an abstractionist, formerly a realist. He loved that in abstract art there was a freedom in expression. In the process of his reinvention as a painter, Carlo acquired a new way of seeing of thought, emotion and handling of material in the art making. His use of colours relates to his minimalistic approach that adheres to the more elemental qualities. Carlo is also obsessed with the use of the circle motif, a ubiquitous presence that reflects his firm foundation in Chinese classical studies and philosophy. In many of his works he creates thin horizontal gridlines that take up a major part of the superimposed composition, creating an animated interplay between the spaces, imaginary and reality that crosses boundaries and barriers. His works are featured in books such as "Philippine Art Now" and "Twentieth Century Filipino Artists”. Carlo Magno has won awards such as the winner of Artist of the Centennial Award, Philippine American Federation of South Florida; Outstanding Malatean Award, Malate Catholic School. He has also won the Grand Prize for “Las Pinas Church” in the Hispanidad Painting Contest, and First Prize for “Ruins along Roxas Blvd”.
Born in 1906, Guandong (China), Chen Wen Hsi (1906-1991) was an artist, an academician and a gallerist. Born in Guandong, China, he studied art at the Shanghai College of Art in 1928. Wen Hsi settled down in Singapore at 1948 and taught art at The Chinese High School from 1949 to 1968, and was concurrently a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts from 1951 to 1959. As a passionate art educator he had greatly influenced many of Singapore’s early Chinese artists. Wen Hsi was a great observer of nature and it was his master inspiration to create exciting work namely, landscapes, human figures and animals. Chickens, gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some of his favourite subjects. Wen Hsi’s constant eagerness to strive for something new led him to learn finger painting - a technique that dates from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style enabled him to produce unpredictable broken strokes on paper. Besides Chinese brush painting, Wen Hsi also created abstract compositions in oil and Chinese inks of which his paintings showed a strong influence of analytical Cubism and Fauvism. He painted ceaselessly throughout his life. He held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Singapore and internationally. Wen Hsi’s artistic excellence was recognised through the various awards he received which include the Public Service Star in 1964, a Gold Medal by the National Museum of History, Taiwan in 1980, the first recipient of the ASEAN Cultural and Communication Award for outstanding artists in 1987 and he also received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Singapore. The Arts Council of Malaya at Raffles Museum first exhibited “Bird Cages” in October 1953. It still has its original white wooden frame and the 1953 exhibition sticker.
Born in Solo in 1965 (Solo, Central Java), Faizal graduated from the Indonesian Arts Institute in Yogyakarta. He travelled and participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Amsterdam, France, Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Singapore. Sotheby’s and auction houses in Indonesia have auctioned the works of Faizal. Artists such as Paul Klee and Jean Dubuffet influenced Faizal. His paintings are colourful and often filled with imaginary and fantasy characters. The artist executes naïve works that possess complex depth and detail. Faizal often depicts delightful scenes with the flavour of folk-tales. With his signature style, Faizal has attracted attention of the art world since the 1990s. The artist is recorded in the “Modern Indonesian Art” catalogue published by Koes Artbooks. He won two awards in Yogyakarta in 1986 for best sketching and best painting. In 1990, he received another best painting in the 6th Anniversary of ISI. One of his works earned him the Medaille du Conseil Generale - Prix D ‘Honneur in France in 1991. The artist’s freely executed naïve works are full of bright colours, precise in execution and have the flavor of folk-tales.
Herry Dim born in 1955 in Bandung, Indonesia, is a contemporary artist who has held numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Indonesia and around the world, including Paris, Japan and Denmark. Known as a painter and performance artist, he is also deeply involved in installation and printmaking. He writes essays, some of which were published in the collection Jawinul; Trips in the Woods of Culture (1993) Since 1975, Herry Dim has held numerous group and solo exhibitions in Indonesia, Malaysia and Europe. These include exhibitions such as the International Exhibition of Asian Artists (Bandung), Yogyakarta Biennale, Biennale Jakarta, International Exhibition of Asian Artists (Kuala Lumpur), 6 Indonesian Painters, at Darga & Lansberg Gallery (Paris), Container 96: Art Across the Oceans (Copenhagen), Platform 1 Canvas Foundation (Amsterdam) and many more.
Graduating from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, Jerry Morada (b. 1979), made a name for himself as an emerging contemporary artist. He began his career working as artist for ProbeProductions, Inc., producer of the award-winning "Probe Team". The focus of most of his paintings is the subject of women, painted in a more surreal style. Morada has always sought to fuse elements of abstraction and figuration in an engrossing configuration of texture, color and composition. Although trained in sculpture, the artist eventually developed and refined his skill in painting and used it to express his interest in history. His fascination with old photographs empowered him with a vision to build his unique style. Women subjects are dominant subjects in Morada’s works. They are depicted being involved in the events and activities of rural life. His works often reach the realm of metaphysics with his preoccupation with dreams and dreaming. Jerry Morada’s works encompass the style of folk art. Jerry Morada remains a dreamer and his art invites one to follow his journey into the realms of the romantic.
Joseph Cals utilizes paint in many different ways, applying it with brushes, palette knives or literally with his hands. He models, rubs out, and over-paints, and each form and colour finds its ultimate destination only after sustained deliberation. Cals’ artistic works follow the maxim “A painting never lies”; words which he heard from his teacher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at The Hague. Cals was born in 1949 in Stein in the Limburg Province which is permeated with a rich archaeological history. At age 18, he received a scholarship to study in the United States. There, he lived near Buffalo New York, with its renowned Albright Knox Gallery, known for it impressive collection of cotemporary art. When Cals turned 19, he returned to the Netherlands where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at The Hague till 1973. In 1975, Cals began teaching at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts at The Hague. In the mid 1980s, Cals was commissioned to undertake seven paintings for the Dutch Houses of Parliament in The Hague. In the 1980’s he taught at the Parsons Institute and Carnegie Hall, both in New York. Cals returned to The Netherlands in the 1990s to paint and sculpt at his studio. He has held numerous exhibitions in the United States, Europe and Asia. The two Cals paintings in Galerie Belvedere were purchased directly from him during his solo exhibition in Singapore. Cals succeeds in uniting the past with the present in a miraculously beautiful, almost imperceptible yet exceedingly tangible manner. The external influences and impressions were brought together by the artist through a personal process of maturation to create a new and authentic visual imagery. The surface of the work plays an important part in this. The scraping away layers of soil (typical of the method used by the archaeologists he once admired in his youth) finds a counterpart in the building up of layers in his paintings. Cals derived new sources of inspiration from his extensive travels which he interweaves into his paintings and sculptures.
Juan Ripolles’ paintings and sculptures have been exhibited at major art galleries worldwide. His mega sculptures have become signature features in many public plazas and parks in numerous cities such as the Retiro Park in Madrid, the Canals of Venice and the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia amongst many others. Ripolles was the first Spanish artist invited to exhibit solo in museums around China. Entitled “Universe Ripolles” the exhibition opened in 2012 at the Beijing World Art Museum and then travelled to museums in Jinan, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu, Nanjing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. The exhibition featured 86 of Juan Ripolles' artworks in total which were made from a variety of materials like metal, paper, cloth and glass, including engravings, oil paintings and sculptures that showcased the artist's versatility. This exhibition was also part of the cultural program offered by the Embassy of Spain in China commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and the People's Republic. In 2007 a world accolade was given to Ripolles enabling him to exhibit his sculptures in Venice, this was only the second time in the history of The Local Government of Italy to allow an artist who was not a local citizen to exhibit an outdoor exhibition. Ripolles’ work can also be seen in the private collections of Klaus and Hilde Schwab, founder of the Word Economic Forum, and Hollywood actor Michael Douglas as well as museums and institutions across Europe, United States, Mexico, Japan, and Singapore. Juan Ripolles was born in Valencia, Spain in 1932. He attended the School of Industrial Arts and Crafts F. Ribalta in Spain before settling in Paris from 1954 to 1963. His works were exhibited at the prestigious Drouand Gallery in Paris which established Juan Ripolles as an important artist. His paintings were then also exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona. From 1969 to 1971, he held major exhibitions in the United States. Finally, in 1972, he settled back in Spain. Ripolles’ artistic style cannot avoid being compared to and influenced by one of the giants of 20th century art - Picasso. Although Ripolles admits his admiration for artists such as Picasso, Goya, and Velazquez, he delivers his own dreamy and ironic way to characterize the figures in his works, which often focus on nature and people. Ripolles was initially closer to painting, creating highly imaginative and very successful works; next he made original engravings, developing new techniques. Finally he discovered the world of sculpture and consequently that of glass. At present, his artworks comprise paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and engravings or grabados ranging from the sublime to flamboyant that creatively incorporate colours and shapes that make his work distinct and recognizable at first glance. Ripolles simultaneously develops volume, size, proportion, sense of touch, resistance and light in his works. He offers a recreational world based on humour and irony and his work presents a wide range of nuances, suggestions, atmospheres, built over interlaced line dualities, over chromatics, ranging from serious to loud, from soft to happy. The bronze sculptures by Ripolles, in particular, convey his unmistakable signature of communicating fun and joy. The sculptures are works made with the heart, and all of them seek to amuse and not get lost in vain intellectualisms. The artist often emphasizes his figures’ enormous heads set on miniscule bodies, underscoring the four senses that reside in the head: hearing, smell, taste and sight. He views the head as the centre of the human being; with the heart completing the poem. Galerie Belvedere represents Juan Ripolles, exhibits several of his paintings and sculptures, and undertakes commissions for large sculptures.
Krijono was born in 1951. His mother was a Batik Factory owner and his father was an art collector who owned Harris Art Gallery. Due to his early exposure to art, Krijono developed the love for art. In 1970, Krijono received his first formal training in art at the Academy of Art of Yogyakarta. He experimented with different mediums including batik, oil, acrylics and even fused traditional paintings and Kimono paintings as a batik combination whilst training in Tokyo. The artist has a distinct style that differentiates him from other Indonesian artists. In his expressionistic paintings, he uses bright colours that are accompanied by spontaneous bold lines and brush strokes. In his use of colours, Krijono strongly believed that he could use any colour in the creation of his works. He refused to mix paints to create colours. He justified this by saying that he was a painter not a mixer. Since moving to Ubud, he transformed his style to a strong, modern expression that was filled with colours, reflecting the Balinese surroundings. His expressive and flamboyant works have been exhibited extensively around the world, including France and Italy, where Gianni Versace was a major collector of his works.
M. Suriyamoorthy (1944-2012) graduated from the Government College of Arts and Crafts Madras in 1963. He went on to become a scholar in State Lalit Kala Akademi, Tamil Nadu in 1963 for two years and then a National Scholar at MS University, Baroda, for another 2 years in 1965. Suriyamoorthy has evolved his own unique style. He created his own colours after the death of his father, a Siddha practitioner, from the unused medicines left behind. The artist also mixed various ingredients to achieve different colors for example, white was made from ground sea shells, natural gum from trees and collected waters from the major rivers of India. This formula that he evolved over many years of experimentation helped his works to retain their painterly qualities, colour and brightness, for over half a century. Suriyamoorthy works in various mediums such as acrylic, oil, pastel, and ink. Creating his own unique style, the artist has never copied any old master nor did he follow any art movement. He paints, as he desires simply to express himself and thereby created a unique style. Suriyamoorthy’s exhibitions include International Art Exhibition, Romania 1998, International Biennale, Bulgaria: Drawing, Printing & Graphics, 1995 & 1997, International Association of Art, under the sponsorship of UNESCO, New Zealand, 1990, 3rd Biennale International Pastel Exhibition, France, 1992; Biennale Van De Kleingratiek, 1993 and Sinj Niklas, 1993–1994. Over the years, his many awards have included the First Indian Drawing Biennale, Chandigarh, Major Art Trends in India, National Award from Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi and the prestigious Award from International Biographical Centre, Cambridge. His works have been collected by National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Lalit Kala Akademi, Chennai; Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta; Government Museum, Chandigarh; Tamilnadu Archaeological Department; Government Museum, Chennai; Government Museum, Hyderabad; Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad, Bangalore.
Madhvi Parekh, (b.1942) received a French Government Scholarship for Fine Arts to study in Paris from 1970-72. She is a modern master in Indian contemporary art. Her paintings are influenced by folk art but also incorporate a modernist style similar to that of Paul Klee and Joan Miró. She portrays her memories from childhood in her paintings. Her works possess a surreal dreamlike quality where images of fantasy and early days are weaved into her paintings. The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, sponsored a documentary film on Madhvi and her artist husband Manu Parekh in 1992.
Neo Kim Chye (b. 1951) graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. The artist's working media are oils, Chinese ink, and specializes in watercolour. Neo Kim Chye has participated in numerous group exhibitions both locally and internationally. His international exhibitions include ones in China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan. Neo Kim Chye's works are also in several corporate collections such as the National University of Singapore, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Port of Singapore Authority. The artist's works were highly commended in several competitions and he is also a life member of the Singapore Arts Society.
Ong Kim Seng 68, is an iconic Singapore artist. He was President of the Singapore Watercolor Society from 1991 to 2001. He has won six awards from the American Watercolor Society (AWS): the Paul B. Remmy Memorial Award in 1983, the Lucy B. Moore Award in 1988, the Clara Stroud Memorial Award in 1989, the Barse Miller Memorial Award in 1992, Winsor & Newton Award in 2000 and the Ida Wells Memorial Award in 2001. He has been an active member of the American Watercolor Society since 1990 and was the first Asian outside the U.S.A. to be awarded membership. Kim Seng was bestowed the Dolphin Fellowship of the AWS in 2000. In 1991, he was awarded the Cultural Medallion for Visual Arts by the Ministry Of Information and the Arts, Singapore. He won the Excellence for Singapore award presented by the Singapore Totalisator Board in 2000 and the Singapore Internationale by the Singapore International Foundation in 2001. He has been an Art Advisor to the National Arts Council since 1998 and is a Life Fellow of the National University of Singapore's Centre of the Arts. In 2004 he was the Artist-in-Residence at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute. In 1993, his work Bhaktapur was the first Singapore watercolour painting to be auctioned by Sotheby's in Hong Kong. In March 1994, his work 'Bali" was auctioned by Christie's in Singapore. His works are now auctioned annually in Singapore and the region. An ardent trekker, Kim Seng has visited the Tianshan region of Sinkiang in China, the Himalayas in Nepal and the Tibetan Plateau many times to trek and paint. Kim Seng catapulted to fame as the ‘Nepal Painter’ in the 1970s, being the first Singapore artist to paint the Himalayan region so memorably. He later received acclaim for his visual travelogues, painting stunning landscapes in Southeast Asia, Asia, Europe and America. His dedication to plein air painting is rooted in his formative years of painting outdoors with pioneer watercolorists such as the late Lim Cheng Hoe. Ong Kim Seng works on his favorite subject: beauty holding strong in the face of urbanization. Each painting is a testament to Kim Seng’s commitment and dedication to his art. He takes pains in promoting the message of conservation of both culture and environment through his artworks.
A multi-disciplinary and self-taught artist, René Lemay (1934-2015) has made his mark in contemporary realist painting for over 20 years. In any medium, he favours expressions of joy and life over academicism. First in drawing and watercolour, and then in acrylic, etching, lacquer and bronze sculpture, his work celebrates the here and now. His pieces have been featured in individual and collective exhibitions in North America and Asia, in prominent galleries and in public and private collections. Born in Montréal, Canada in 1934, Lemay felt a strong inclination toward the arts since his early childhood. Despite this, he practiced various trades before finally giving free rein to his passion in 1983. He learned ceramics and lithography and, in the 1970s and 1980s, founded an artisanal pottery studio and a publishing company. He followed this atypical path back to the visual arts, later earning a reputation as a watercolourist. In 1990, he participated in his first of many professional exhibitions. His subsequent work in acrylic is known for its vibrant hues, its liveliness and its expressions of delight. In the 1990s, Lemay began travelling extensively. These travels marked a turning point in his artistic journey, as can be seen in his choice of colours and his paintings’ subjects. During this period, the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Asia became the epicentres of his creative universe. He sketched the inspiration for his work in Thailand, China, Bali, Vietnam and Singapore. In Hanoi, he learned techniques such as lacquer and, more recently, bronze sculpting from the masters.
Rien Bout (1937–2003) was a Professor at the Hague Royal Academy of Visual Arts where he taught painting and drawing. He was commissioned to paint an official portrait of Queen Beatrix and was awarded in 2000 the prestigious UNESCO Prize in Monaco. Rie held many exhibitions in the Netherlands and internationally. His paintings depict a variety of themes, including landscapes, still life, portraits, and historical pieces. In his works, he delved in contrasts: flat surfaces versus spaciousness, vague sections versus elaborate details, tranquility versus movement. Until the late seventies, his works were characterized by their realistic reproduction and its large format. During the eighties, Rien stayed in Mexico where he was inspired to create artworks with Latin American mysticism. He transcended from realism to abstractionism. Rien Bout has been described by David Hockney as the modern "Van Gogh".
Sakti Burman, (b. 1935), is one of India’s Masters of Contemporary Indian art. He incorporates both Western-style painting and traditional Indian culture. He paints medieval icons in a dream-like manner, by using a marbling effect – blending oil and acrylic paint together. His paintings are rich and bold in colour and exude fantasy and romanticism. Burman grew up in Calcutta and graduated from the Calcutta College of Art and Crafts in 1956. He later studied at L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris and was inspired by the paintings of the Renaissance period. He has held many exhibitions in London, Iran, Moscow, Leningrad, Belfast and Yokohama. Burman continues to live and work in Paris.
The "Baron of Batik", Sarkasi Said (b1940), who goes by the name Tzee, is Singapore’s most well known batik painter. Sarkasi uses a modern adaptation of Indonesia’s traditional batik textile art of dyes and wax. The process he uses is similar to that of other batik printers. However, he extends it by repeatedly washing, boiling and painting on silk and experimenting with different dyes. Sarkasi still uses the canting, a traditional wax container with a spout that he uses to draw on the fabric. Sarkasi has participated in many exhibitions since 1972, both as a solo artist and in group shows in Singapore and internationally. Sarkasi has also won several awards for his work such as the Best Entry Prize from the Sarasota Art Association in the United States in 1980 and the First Prize (Abstract Painting) in the United Overseas Bank’s 8th Painting of the Year Competition in 1989. In addition, Sarkasi was honoured with the Pingat APAD by the Angkatan Pelukis Aneka Daya (APAD) for his contributions to the development of art. Sarkasi’s works are part of many distinguished public and private collections.
Sudarisman (b.1948) graduated from the Academie of Art in Yogyakarta. He studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten Psycopolis, Den Haag, The Netherlands on a scholarship from the Dutch Ministry of Culture and Recreation for studying the technique of “Renaissance Paintings and Modern Art”. In the cities, he has found contrasts between contemporary and traditional buildings or shops. His objective is to show the contrasts and contradictions but at the same time obtain harmony and unity by mixing realistic and abstract expressions. The abstract symbols in his works show us the power of technology and its influence on mankind. On the other hand, Sudarisman has a lot of respect for his traditional society, especially the traditional craftsmen and artists and he loves to represent them in his work. The colours Sudarisman uses are very characteristic of him, with warm colours dominant and cold colours receding.
Sun Yee (1919-2009) was born in Zhejiang, China. She studied at the Xinhua Art Academy in Shanghai and the University of Japan in Tokyo before proceeding to France where she studied with noted French modernist, Fernand Leger. Her works have been met with exhibition successes in France and Japan. A master artist of the Chinese brush and oil medium, she had exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1953. Sun Yee settled in Singapore in 1954 where she established the Singapore Academy of Arts and was an active participant in the emerging Malayan art world. Her first exhibition in Singapore was held in 1954 after her extensive travels in Malaya, Thailand and Borneo, studying and painting local landscapes and subjects. In her art and writings, Sun Yee advocated the development of the localised visual idiom based in and around local subject matters. In 1963, she held an exhibition in Singapore titled 'Flowers of Nanyang' where works depicted local and regional botanical species through the medium of Chinese ink. Sun Yee’s paintings are in the Permanent Collection of the National University of Singapore Museum.
Symon (b. 1947) is an American artist from the Midwest who has lived in Bali since 1972 producing paintings and drawings on Balinese customs and pop art. He is best known for his bold portraits of Balinese men, done in vivid tropical colours and often on an exaggerated scale. In 1964, Symon ran away from home at the age of 17 to look for writer Henry Miller and soon ended up in Bali where he established his first studio in 1978 - the first seriograph silkscreen production art studio in South East Asia. Influenced by great artists such as Arie Smit and Andy Warhol, Symon’s work reflects pop culture in both Bali and America. His expressive paintings explore his own idiosyncratic paradigm and each work becomes a genuine declaration of his artistic vision. His energetic and sometimes whimsical take on Balinese life and landscapes makes a refreshing change from the more sedate traditional views so popular with many other Ubud artists. Symon’s works have been exhibited in prestigious venues such as the British Museum in London, the Art Basel in Switzerland, and the Solander Gallery in Australia. His works are also in the permanent collection of the Neka Art Museum, the largest museum in Bali, Indonesia. Symon frequently travels throughout South East Asia and paints colour fields with nudes and mythological beings. Acting as a visionary with a vocation in pure art, Symon has created a palace to the lords of art, and his studio, also known as Art Zoo/Camp Colour has become a destination art experience in Bali, Indonesia and is featured in guidebooks such as Frommer’s and Lonely Planet.
Ugo Untoro, (b.1970) graduated from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta. He has held solo exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur as well as participated in group exhibitions in the United States of America, China, France and Vietnam. He is known to have brought contemporary Indonesian art to a new level. Over the past decade, Ugo Untoro has elaborated a collection of paintings, drawings, poems and writings. His signature style is raw and spontaneous influenced by his street background and graffiti art knowledge. His entry to the Philip Morris Art Awards in 1998 was placed within the Best 5; and Tempo Magazine of Indonesia named him Man of the Year in 2007. Since 1995 he has had numerous solo exhibitions in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Yogyakarta, Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya, and has participated in group exhibitions in USA, France, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam. Ugo Untoro lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
During the colonial period, British artists such as Richard Walker and W. M. Clyde painted Singapore Scenes. Watercolour was the principal medium used by British artists in Singapore during the colonial period. The three paintings of Singapore scenes were painted in 1949, 1950, and 1953.
Warsito (1946-2007) is an Indonesian painter who was born in Java in 1946. He was a member of the Sanggar Aksera (Art Association) of Surabaya, Java. Strong, simple designs and colour ranges are typical in his work. His paintings are striking and intricate, especially his detailed rendition of the fabric patterns and headdresses worn by Javanese women. Painted with a poetic innocence, he is well known for his Balinese subjects while his work also includes everyday scenes of life in Indonesia.
Wong Keen was born in Singapore in 1942 and at an early age developed an interest in art under the tutelage of veterans Liu Kang and Chen Wen Hsi, and became accomplished in the art of calligraphy and Chinese ink painting. He was also influenced by the Shanghai School’s combination of brush expression with compositional innovation. In 1961, he arrived in New York to study at the Art Students League and subsequently won in 1965 the prestigious Edward G McDowell Travelling Scholarship which enabled him to study at St Martin’s School of Art, London. In New York, he met and interacted with leading American Expressionists and was especially influenced by Willem de Kooning and Dong Kingman. He also drew inspiration from British artist Francis Bacon. Wong Keen has imbibed these influences resulting in his own stunning compositions. He held his first solo exhibition at the National Library in Singapore in 1961 prior to setting out for New York. The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) commemorated him with an exhibition entitled “A Singapore Abstract Expressionist” in 2007. The Museum has sixty three of his works in its Permanent Collection. In October 2007, The National Art Museum of China, Beijing exhibited his works in a landmark exhibition, “Encounters and Journeys”. Galerie Belvedere presented “Expressions by Wong Keen” in 2007 at The Arts House, Singapore. In June 2010, Wong Keen participated together with leading artists from China in the much lauded “Ex-change 2010-China-Singapore Art Showcase” at Yinggu Mansion, Beijing.In 2011, Wong Keen was featured prominently in the “Grand Masters of Art Exhibition” presented by Galerie Belvedere in Singapore. In 2012, Wong Keen participated in the “Contemporary Chinese Paintings” exhibition at The National Art Museum of China in Beijing. He has won critical acclaim for his brilliant abstract expressionist compositions in the US, China and Singapore. His style infuses the grace of Chinese calligraphy with the energetic, individualistic brushwork of the New York School. The familiar motifs of the lotus and the female nude are rendered in the deft strokes of a mature painter. The lotus flower, which is symbolic and of spiritual value in Asian art and in particular the Chinese tradition, blooms and survives in diverse conditions. His study of the lotus flower is an experimentation of form, influenced by Western Expressionism. He speaks of the complete freedom of expression that the lotus allows and how effortlessly it lends to imaginative experimentation. “The shape of the lotus leaf changes constantly with the slight touch of a breeze, and transforms into hundreds of different shapes and forms when light falls on it”. Wong Keen’s art has an international dimension, synthesizing Asian tradition with American individualism. He was Ai Weiwei’s Mentor in New York in the 1980’s.
Yong Mun Sen (1896-1962) was born in, Kuching, Sarawak. Mun Sen is considered as one of the pioneer artists who influenced the birth and growth of modern contemporary Malaysian art and is widely known as the Father of Malaysian Painting. Although trained in formal Chinese brush painting and calligraphy in China, he was drawn to watercolours and later oils. He was best known for his fluid execution of landscapes in watercolour. Mun Sen went to Kwantung (now Guangdong), China in 1901 for formal education specialising in calligraphy. During the stay, the experience of witnessing a Japanese watercolour artist made an indelible impression on Mun Sen. Since then, he painted in the watercolour medium which eventually it became one of his greatest strengths. In 1920, Mun Sen moved to Penang and instantly fell in love with the island; he was captivated by the charm of Penang. He had his own art studio on Penang Road and later Northam Road. In 1936, together with fellow artists, Mun Sen formed the Penang Chinese Art Club. Mun Sen excelled in watercolour paintings that depicted landscapes, which incorporate influences from Chinese art resulting in more airy and generalised compositions rather than detailed depictions. Since his death in 1962, his works have retained an important and honoured place in Malaysian art. He was honoured with a memorial exhibition at the National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 1972.
Zhu Wei, is one of China's most notable contemporary artists. He has published six volumes on his works so far. His paintings usually depict characters from China's modern history. Zhu Wei was born in Beijing in 1966. In his teenage years, Zhu entered the military. His soldiering days ended when he was admitted to the People's Liberation Army Art Academy, in 1989. After a few years of painting propaganda art for the motherland, his unit was demobilized in 1992. In 1993 he went to study at the Beijing Academy of Film. Despite his educational background and association with the artistic values of state sanctioned art, Zhu has an incredible knowledge of Chinese tradition and spends enormous effort in perfecting his ink washes (also called Chinese painting), a technique popularized by Taoist artists in fourth and fifth centuries. His works are widely collected in Asia, Europe, and the United States and often feature in international auctions.
