Sukamto lives in a tiny village in the middle of a sugar plantation and is thus isolated from modern civilization.
Old Javanese customs, mysticism and animism, as well as the famous Wayang (Puppet) Theatre inspire his imagination.
His great wealth of themes and incredible technique revitalize the old stories and myths. His works are very nostalgic and strives to recreate traditional life in Java as it was a few decades ago. He works mostly with pastel on paper.
He realizes that the Javanese are being cut off from their past and wants to restore the link with that past by portraying legendary or everyday characters in traditional Javanese clothing. His colourful country scenes, wayang and herb peddlers are all little gems and a joy to behold.
